In the sometimes chaotic world of artisan trading, there's a certain type of individual who will thrive on the unknown. They're the "Makers gonna make" type of trader, who, even when faced with a product request that they haven’t heard of, will somehow manage to pull a rabbit out of a hat and deliver.
For the uninitiated, such as us market organisers, this might trigger a full-blown panic attack. But for the seasoned trader, it's just another Saturday night of crafting.
And that’s what happened to the fabulous Kristal of Zebramingo Crafts. She was asked by one of her fellow stall holders to make a ‘’moon bag’’. Kristal has a wealth of experience when it comes to her products, however on this occasion she was stumped on what a ‘’moon bag’’ was. So, as we all do when we want a bespoke item, we google ideas and keep images, which is what this particular customer had done. Upon showing Kristal the image, she realised it’s what she refers to as a ‘’slouch bag’’.
So, after the initial embarrassment that Kristal faced of not knowing what the customer was looking for, and let’s face it, we’ve all experienced something similar when we may not know what someone is referring to, she got to designing the moon bag and after showing her customer, who was delighted with the design, Kristal got down to what she loves, the sewing machine was out and she began making the bespoke item knowing that her creation is going to make her customer happy.
Being an artisan trader is more than just following a set of rules. It is an art, science and problem solving all rolled into one. So, if you feel you have an out there request for one of these skilled traders, just remember they have a ‘’makers gonna make’’ mentality.
With the right skills and a healthy dose of determination - anything is possible for these artisan traders!
